Manifesto for Trees 3
3. Keep the carbon locked up
Single trees, small clumps, large standard trees in coppice woods and well-spaced hedgerow trees with large well-developed canopies absorb more carbon than trees in woodland. We must allow room for trees to flourish. An acre of American sycamore can absorb three tonnes of carbon per year.
Wood should not be burnt unnecessarily as it adds to the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We need to find more permanent uses for timber harvested from woods so that the carbon is not released to increase the rate of global warming.
