Tree Dressing Day

Tree Dressing Day around the world

Tokyo artist Katsuya Ise dressed this tree (above) on Mitcham Green in the London Borough of Merton in 1993. Cotton threads suspended over 100 small bags of rice. In Japan life symbolizes life and prosperity, and here hundreds of hanging bags demonstrate the striving of the tree against gravity and its own role as The Tree of Life. The illumination was provided by floodlights.
