The Stour

Gussage

The Gussage rises at Gussage St Andrew in Dorset, and flows through several other villages which have assumed its name: Gussage St Michael, Gussage All Saints. It joins the Allen about a mile to the west of the famous Knowlton Circles. It often floods in its upper reaches.

Ekwall suggests the name comes from a Saxon form of an early Germanic word 'gusi' (water suddenly breaking forth), combined with the Old English 'sic' (a water course).

The picture shows the Gussage at Farnham.
