The River Path

Structures and Buildings

The way we have modified rivers may have added layers of difference and meaning, or may have obliterated all clues to earlier natural and cultural predecessors. There have been moments when cooperation down whole valleys was necessary to maintain the complex use of water for agriculture and power. There have been disputes and even wars.

A range of ingenious and often beautiful structures and devices have evolved as a result of our attempt to control and make best use of the water, enhancing a river valley's biological diversity at the same time. Many of these structures have lost their original purpose such as water meadow, mill or hydraulic ram but do they point the way? Could they be reinvented for producing locally sustainable forms of energy and food
