Rainow to Swynnerton
RAINOW, Cheshire - Rainow WI with Cheshire Landscape Trust made a contour map with embroidery, showing the settlements with rivers, roads, and quarries and mine workings marked by actual stones. Displayed in the local school, 1994.
RATLEY, EDGEHILL and UPTON, Warwickshire - a Michaelmas quilt made in 1993.
RATTERY, Devon - An 18" x 24" watercolour map designed in 1993-94 to be a feature of the new village hall. The map promotes permissive paths, links new houses with old people's bungalows, and shows the original water supply. All springs, water sources and wells in the parish are noted. In August 1996 a walks leaflet was produced featuring extracts from the map.
RATTLESDEN, Suffolk - a paper map.
RAVENSTONEDALE (pronounced RASSENDUL), Cumbria (Westmorland) - drawn up by the community in 1999/2000, it is available for £5.00 as a high quality monochrome print, showing the whole parish on one side and the village on the reverse. It incorporates comments, memories and historical notes from many local people and is supported by an A4 pamphlet giving further details of locations and histories. READ, Lancashire - an A1 poster showing buildings in paint and pen & ink sketches. Made in 1994 for the centenary of parish councils.
READING, Berkshire - Wargrave Comprehensive School made a map as part of their Art and Design course.
REDBOURN, Hertfordshire - a poster painted in 1994, initiated by the parish council. A local artist produced the resulting map, proceeds from which would go towards the establishment of an environmental area at the entrance of the village for picnics and recycling banks.
REDLYNCH, Wiltshire - a 6' x 6' 3-D quilted embroidery made by a local sewing circle between 1987-89, but involving the whole village in providing input and information. Unfortunately it has no permanent home.
REGENTS PARK, London - a 116" x 93" oil on canvas map made in 1987.
RHYDYCROESAU, Shropshire - a tapestry and a watercolour were made between 1991 and 93, and a number of maps have been created as off-shoots including a tactile map for the blind, a video and a sound map.
RICKMANSWORTH, Hertfordshire - a painted poster made in 1995 showing the parish past and present.
RIMINGTON, and MIDDOP, Yorkshire/Lancashire - A map painted between 1992 - 96, with the parish council as co-ordinators and information provided by local people through questionnaires. A poster was printed, with revenue going towards management of the village institute (where the map is housed) and an action fund to fight against proposed mineral extraction in the area.

RODBOROUGH, Gloucestershire - an A4 poster produced by the voluntary rights of way officer for Rodborough.
ROGATE, West Sussex - a 52" x 36" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is displayed in the village hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
ROTHERHAM, South Yorkshire - map work with 27 urban parishes and 47 schools took place between 1987-88.
ROTTINGDEAN - an applique collage made in 1988 for an exhibition at Michelham Priory organised by the East Sussex Federation of Womens Institutes.
RUYTON XI TOWNS, Shropshire - a number of different maps were created in different media - photography, writing, painting - for an exhibition in the parish church in 1987.
RYTON, Warwickshire - made in 1991 for the Rugby Borough Council competition.
ST DOMINICK, Cornwall - Five maps showing the village at different stages in its history, 1485, 1748, 1841, 1951 and 1995, looking at history, buildings, settlements, economy and spelling of name, 1994-95. Reproduced as posters.
ST MARTINS, Shropshire - an embroidered tapestry made in 1994 which won the Calor Gas Parish Map Award. A core group of six co-ordinated the map, drawing in the school and over sixty people from the village. The map is housed in the parish church.
SAMPFORD BRETT, Somerset - three historical / photographic records of the parish over one year, made in 1988.
SANDON and BURSTON, Staffordshire - a mixed media map made in 1987.
SANDRIDGE, Hertfordshire - an A1 poster made in 1995 showing the parish past and present.

SEDLESCOMBE, East Sussex - (1) a 30" x 21.5" painted / pen & ink map made for the centenary of the parish council in 1994, though the idea had been under consideration for some time. 80 year old artist Jim Davies had lived in the village as a child. The map shows local flora and fauna, local events, information about the village and a depiction of how it has grown over the prceeding hundred years. (2) An 18-foot long tapestry recording 2000 years of history in Sedlescombe parish was unveiled in the new village hall on 20 April 2002 by Pauline Raymond, Clerk to the Parish Council. The tapestry was conceived by a group of local ladies when the Parish Council invited ideas on how the village should mark the millennium. The tapestry was master-minded by Jenny Mitchell and created by 14 ladies who each embroidered one or two panels. The tapestry will be a permanent fixture in the hall and is hung in a giant glass frame.
SELSEY, West Sussex - a 54" x 41" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is kept in the town hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place. Some more details can be found here.
SHALFORD, Essex - (1) Shalford Parish Council initiated a 53" x 48" painted collage showing buildings, field names, wild life, and local history. School children, pensioners, the local history society and landowners were all involved in providing information which was assembled by 15 artists and calligraphers in 1992-93. It is displayed in the village hall; (2) project work in 1993 between a local school and Essex Rural Community Council. See what local people have said about the map.

SHAPWICK, Somerset - a 6' square watercolour map initiated by the parish council in 1990-91. Shows the parish past and present. It is housed in the village hall.
SHAUGH PRIOR, Devon - a photographic map displayed in the village hall.
SHEFFIELD, South Yorkshire - (1) Sheffield City Arts Dept initiated the Patchmap project in 1987, involving 22 local schools who mapped their areas; (2) Sheffield Wildlife Trust took a map round on the 1995 Wildlife Road Show; children and parents were invited to add what they felt was important and their favourite place. Panels made at each of the six places visited were joined together to make the final map, which is now kept in the SWT's meeting room.
SHEFFORD, Bedfordshire. Fabric on board, 6 feet square. Made by the local scout group, this was very large and fragile and no longer exists, though they are interested in making a more permanent map, 1988.
SHENLEY, Hertfordshire - a 4' x 3' painted poster displayed in the village hall, 1991-92. 900 new homes and light industrial units were being built on old hospital grounds, more than doubling the size of the village. This map was made so residents and newcomers alike had a record of the place, and its identity before it was changed forever.
SHEPTON MALLET, Somerset - a 60" x 40" painted map bringing an artist in residence at Whitstone School together with 48 other adults and children in 1995. The resulting map is housed in the school.
SHILTON, Warwickshire - a collage made in 1991 for the Rugby Borough Council competition.
SHIPHAM, Somerset - Sketches engraved onto plastic on a stone plinth. Displayed on the Village Green and at the entrance to the village, 1986-93. Also a paper map made in 1989.
SHIPLEY, West Sussex - a 48" x 36" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It hangs in the parish church and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
SHIPSTON ON STOUR, Warwickshire - made in 1991 for the Rugby BC competition.
SHOREHAM, Kent - a paper map made in 1987.
SHUTE, Devon - a 40" x 30" watercolour map initiated by the Parish Council.
SIBFORD GOWER, Oxfordshire - Sibford Millennium Panels book produced in 2000 showing each house with information on when they were built and who lived in them. The book is on sale in the village shop for £8.00.
SIDLESHAM, West Sussex - a 49" x 36" watercolour map and collage, made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
SILVERTON, Devon - a 36.5" x 31.5" embroidery on linen made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995 .
SINGLETON, West Sussex - made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

SLINDON, West Sussex - 84" x 120" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is on display in Slindon Coronation Hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
SLINFOLD, West Sussex - a 42" x 53" embroidery map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project, and kept on display in the village hall. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
SMALLEY, Derbyshire - Based on a field name and land ownership map of 1784, this map was compiled for a village festival in 1990 as a by-product of research into the history of the village school.
SNAPE, North Yorkshire - a textile and painted map made in 1996 and now hanging in the village institute.
SNOWDOWN, BARFRESTON and NONINGTON, Kent - an 82" x 72" collage featuring photos, silk screen work, acrylic and Japanese paper on cotton, 1986.
SOLIHULL, West Midlands - 'Solihull in Stitches', a textile map made in 1993.
SOUTHBOURNE, West Sussex - made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
SOUTH HAMS, Devon - a number of maps have been promoted by South Hams District Council, including Aveton Gifford and Rattery.
SOUTH MILTON, Devon - a textile map made in 1988, on display in the village hall.
SOUTHOVER, East Sussex - a tapestry made in 1988 for an exhibition at Michelham Priory organised by the East Sussex Federation of Womens Institutes.
SOUTH SHIELDS, County Durham - a textile embroidered map made in 1988 by local primary school children.
SOUTH STOKE, West Sussex - a 39" x 52" watercolour map of a parish with a population of 56, made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. At the moment it is not on display as the parish does not have a suitable public building, but it is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
SOUTHWARK, London - a map made under the auspices of the North Southwark Community Development Group.
SOUTHWATER, West Sussex - made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
SOUTHWELL, Portland, Dorset - A 42" x 27" wallhanging embroidered onto cotton material by SALT (Southwell Area Living Together), depicting a selection of old and significant buildings in the area and the most common flora and fauna. It is hoped to display it in St Andrew's Church.
SOUTHWELL, Notts - a map drawn and painted in 1987 on goatskin vellum, showing footpaths and bridleways, along with farming and wildlife in the parish.
STAMFORD, Lincolnshire - three maps resulted from the 'Art in Stamford Schools' project in 1989, one musical, one a 6' x 4' needlepoint work, and one mixed media.
STANDLAKE, Oxfordshire - In 1989, over 60 people, aged from 5 to 80, were involved in the creation of a 5' x 7' collage, inspired by a local artist and the parish council. Many village groups, societies, schools and individuals contributed a 5" square depicting their view of village life which became a border collage for a watercolour by the artist, showing fields and hedgerows. STAPLEFIELD, West Sussex - a 76" x 62" watercolour, pen & ink and photographic map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It hangs in the village hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
STEBBING, Essex - an A1 painted poster made by one person but with information from local historians and older residents.
STEDHAM with IPING, West Sussex - 33" x 23" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is kept in Stedham Memorial Hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
STILLINGTON, County Durham - Photographic boards and four booklets looking at the school history, industry and churches in the parish, 1988. The Parish Council combined the four booklets into one.
STOGUMBER, Somerset - an A4 leaflet with hand drawn maps helping people to discover the village. Working with an artist, villagers, shop owners and the head teacher marked out their favourite walks as the basis for the map.
STOKE BISHOP, Bristol - textile, 1990.
STOKE PRIOR, Worcestershire - A map made by pupils at Stoke Prior First School in 2006 as part of the Worcestershire Parish Mapping Project.
STOKE ROW, Oxfordshire - a drawn map.
STOCKLAND, Devon - A 32" x 40" watercolour map made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. On display in the village hall.
STONE, Buckinghamshire - three embroidered panels in St John Baptist Church, involved the whole village in their production between 1980-89.
STRETTON with APPLETON, Cheshire - A metal plaque on a sandstone plinth, 1990.
STURMINSTER NEWTON, Dorset - a map embroidered by Sturminster Newton WI in 1995.
SUFFOLK WEST FEDERATION OF WOMENS INSTITUTES initiated a number of maps in 1987, including: Assington, Bardwell, Barrow, Barton Mills, Botesdale, Chelworth, Cockfield, Great Waldingfield, Hadleigh, Lavenham, Naughton, Nedging, Norton, Packenham, Rickinghall, Stoke by Clare, Thurston, Tuddenham, and Wickham Brook.
SUNDERLAND - THE RIVER WEAR, County Durham - A 30' x 8' textile map made by twenty one schools, organised by Sunderlands Museum Education Service in 1989. It is kept in the local museum. See what local people have said about the map.
SUNNISIDE, County Durham - Sunniside In Stitches - a textile project working with reminiscence, and across all age groups, 1995.
SURLINGHAM, Norfolk - a textile map made between 1992-94 and housed in the church.
SURREY HILLS CELEBRATION MAP - a 12' x 7' map commissioned by Surrey County Council to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1998. It is a representation of the parishes within the AONB and is carved from local oak.
SUTTON and BIGNOR, West Sussex - a 55" x 88" needlework and applique map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is displayed in the parish church and is featured in the book A Sense of Place. See what local people have said about the map.
SWALLOWCLIFFE, Wiltshire - a huge fabric and needlework map occupying one wall of the village hall, made in response to a millennium award in 2000. It has two panels contrasting the seasons, one showing trees, flora and fauna. Most of the houses depicted were made by the occupiers.
SWANMORE, Hampshire - A 6' x 3' 6" embroidery produced to celebrate the 150th anniversary of St Barnabas Church. The design was by resident Valerie Spendlove, with ideas coming from open meetings. It was sewn between 1993-95 by over 20 women working with embroidery expert Ann Wheeler. The work has been displayed in the Paterson Centre and postcards are available. FIVEHEAD and SWELL, Somerset - 24" x 17" colour map produced in 1996. So much information was collected while working on the map that a book was published in 1999 called 'Beyond the Map of Fivehead and Swell', an 8" x 6" paperback of 90 pages, including photos.
