MADEHURST, West Sussex - made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

MAIDA VALE, London - a 71" x 7" painting with oils and acrylic, 1986

MALBOROUGH, Devon - A 24" x 30" watercolour made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995.

MALLING, East Sussex - The winning map in an exhibition at Michelham Priory organised by the East Sussex Federation of Womens Institutes in 1988. It is a 22" x 30" embroidered applique hanging and is now housed at Malling Primary School.

MANATON, Devon - a 6' x 4' textile map made by the local Women's Institute group with parishioners as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995.

MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL - centenary hanging made in 1994 showing the story of the canal past and present. Displayed at Stretford Civic Theatre.

MARKET LAVINGTON, Wiltshire - Artist Julieann Worrall Hood worked with sculptor Judy Boyd on a textile and digitally printed images map in 1999.

MARLDON, Devon - Marldon Parish Map and booklet – a two year project starting in 1998 and completed in April 2006 to celebrate the Millennium (see detail above). The Marldon Parish Map Group’s research and discussion involved lots of people in the village of all ages and walks of life. The illustrations were created by local artists and put together to make the final map. The booklets works as a record and key of the information on the map, in case such details in time were lost. The project was financed by grants from Devon County Council, South Hams District Council and Marldon Parish Council. Proceeds from sales go to the Parish Council Environmental Group used for footpath work and other works to enhance the village. Common Ground for details of how to buy this map and booklet.

MARY TAVY, Devon - A 6' x 4' map made from calico spray-painted with fabric shapes attached. Made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995.

MATCHING GREEN, Essex - a map made by Virginia Waples in 1996 with help from many local people. The map was inspired by her work on the Lavers map.

MAYHILL, Gloucestershire - A map made in 1997 which covers five parishes (one of which is in Herefordshire)

MEASHAM, Derbyshire - a textile map in three parts, displayed at the local medical centre. It shows Measham past, present and future, and was designed and made by local children and adults with Mantle Community Arts, 1992-3. A postcard is available from Measham Community Office.

MEDSTEAD, Hampshire - a map illustrated by Jennifer Lines for a village noticeboard made in 1996, showing rights of way and other features around the parish.

MELKSHAM, Wiltshire - a painted map made in 1992 by Melksham WI for a Wiltshire Federation of WIs competition. It shows the buildings of the town in 1992, with flaps which, if lifted, reveal the buildings that used to be in the same place. It is displayed in the town hall.

MEMBURY, Devon - a map produced in 1996.

MENUDEN, Essex - project work in 1993 between a local school and Essex Rural Community Council.

MERE, Wiltshire - A map showing items of historic and tourist interest, painted and drawn in 1994. It includes buildings and landmarks, local flora and fauna, industry and leisure activities. MERSTHAM, Surrey - a watercolour map showing buildings of the parish.

MIDHURST, West Sussex - a 54" x 40" gouache map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is to be displayed in the library, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

MILLAND, West Sussex - a 48" x 60" computer assembled watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is on show in Milland memorial hall, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place. See what local people have said about the map.

MILTON KEYNES, Buckinghamshire - 1994: Fabric of Milton Keynes, 11 textile were maps made with the help of five textile artists using felt, embroidery and patchwork. Many were accompanied by specially written songs: (1) Spencer Street, New Bradwell - 22 families made a 'rainbow' map of the streets' life - teapots, home grown veg, favourite trees; (2) Camphill Communities - Batik, machine embroidery, weaving and silk painting by adults with learning difficulties; (3)Woodhill - Woodhill Prison inmates produced a felt map based on a medieval plan of the land the prison was built on; (4) Stony Stratford - Local schools with residents made a felt map based on a 17th century map with images of the town now as a border; (5) Lakes Estate - Asian women's group made a machine embroidered map whose centre-piece was a 'symbol' of Milton Keynes - a roundabout; (6) Radcliff - School A level art students made a mixed media map showing the old railway works; (7) Walton - OU craft group made a tapestry / embroidery showing the physical features of the University and its faculties; (8) Loughton and Cavendish - School worked with sheltered housing scheme to make a felt map showing the old village being taken over by new developments; (9) Fuller Slade - map made at a drop in centre showing features on the estate; (10) Simpson - WI created a patchwork repeating a pattern of the canal bridge through the seasons; (10) See Emberton.

MINSTERLEY, Shropshire - an embroidered map made in 1993 and housed in the Callow Room of the parish hall.

MORECAMBE, Lancashire - 'Morecambe Streets', a music and song project which started in 1994 to culminate in the 1996 Morecambe Festival. A musician and songwriter worked with a cross-section of the community, from children to pensioners. A set of posters has been produced.

MORETONHAMPSTEAD, Devon - a 47" x 33" collage made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. Features black and white line drawings of historic subjects alongside present day life in the parish. Displayed in the Information Centre.

MOTCOMBE, Dorset - a 6' x 8' triptich in the village hall, 1995. Covers 100 years of history, showing changes that have occurred and field names.

MOTTRAM IN LONGENDALE, Cheshire - A fold-up map, initiated by the Longendale Heritage Trust, and reproduced to be used as a guide for tourists, 1994.

MOWCOP, Cheshire - An animated film, 5-7 minutes long, built on a soundtrack of stories and poems from local people, and from images provided by local children, 1995.

MUCHELNEY, Somerset, an ink-on-paper black and white map made in 1987.

NAILSWORTH, Gloucestershire - a carving in Cotswold stone symbolically representing a circular walk in the village. Made in 1988, it currently resides in the sculptor's garden.

NASSINGTON, Northants - a 23.5" x 16.5" black & white line drawing made in 1989.

NAVESTOCK, Started in 1996 and finished in 2001, this Millennium Project of the Navestock Village Society is a low relief, picture map measuring 6 feet by 4 feet executed in acrylic. It has a miniature of every house in the parish, many drawn by the people who live in them. The background is coloured to show the crops grown in 1999, the hedgerows, the woods and many other features including ancient field names. Symbols locate 'vanished treasures' and 'priceless survivals'. The border is a treasury of wildlife and locally important heraldic shields with the family names of every resident. There is a Companion 90 page booklet. The map was started with encouragement from Common Ground following the exhibition of Parish Maps at The Barbican in 1996.

NETTLESTONE and SEAVIEW, Isle of Wight - a 6' x 4' heavy embroidered map, devised by the parish council working with the embroiders guild and thirty other contributors between 1992-95. Shows past and present alongside reminiscences, such as the QEII sailing past. On display in St Peter's Church.

NEWCHURCH, Isle of Wight - with Alverstone and Apse Heath. Three maps were made in 1995, one for each of the three villages to be hung with one of the whole parish. They are now displayed at Newchurch Parish Hall, Alverstone Village Hall and Apse Heath Post Office.

NEW MARSTON, Oxfordshire - In 1994, local school children contributed to a large 3-D jigsaw showing the routes to school. Housed in the Oxford Education Centre.

NEWPORT PAGNELL, Buckinghamshire - map initiated by Parish Council.

NEWTON with HACEBY, Lincolnshire - a paper map made in 1986 and displayed in the church porch.

NEWTON ABBOTT, Devon - A circular acrylic map made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995.

NONINGTON, Kent - a stitched textile map showing footpaths. See also Snowdown.

NORFOLK RURAL COMMUNITY COUNCIL have promoted parish map-making since 1990, with maps being produced in Brancaster, East Rigleford, Hornington, Narborough (housed in the Community Centre), Stiffkey, and Whissonsett.

NORTHAMPTON - a map painted in 1991 by a reminiscence group from NUTRAC (Northampton Unwaged Resource Training Centre).

NORTH CADBURY, Somerset - a 64" x 48" painting made by 60 adults and children in 1996 as a community project co-ordinated by Kate Lynch. It hangs permanently in the Village Hall.

NORTHILL, Bedfordshire - 27 inches by 25 inches. Embroidered on linen as a banner, representing the Local Maypole Heritage Society, 1991.

NORTH MUNDHAM, West Sussex - a 42" x 29" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is kept in the foyer of the village hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

NORTH TAWTON, Devon - A very heavy (21 lbs) 37" x 44.5" collage made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995 and now on display in the church.

NORTON ST PHILIP, Somerset - made in Ellsbridge House calligraphy class, 1995.

NOTTING HILL, London - Work started on a map in 1995 as part of a public art / local distinctiveness project in the area.

NUNTHORPE, N. Yorkshire - map showing local footpaths and a brief history, 1989.

OAKLEY, Hampshire - A 60cm x 80cm map showing rights of way with local arts class pictures of buildings. Displayed in the village centre by the pond, 1995.

OLD MILVERTON, Warwickshire - (1) a 78" x 9" pencil and crayon on paper map by Simon Lewty, made in 1986 for an exhibition entitled Knowing Your Place. It is now kept by the University of Warwick. (2) A map, book and paper made in 1987.

ORLINGBURY, Northants - a 72" x 48" textile map made in 1992 and housed in the village hall. A fabric collage, using embroidery, crochet, knitting and applique, this map won first prize in a rural community council competition. The prize money was used to purchase a special protective case for it.

OSMINGTON, Dorset - a poster made in 1996 by local residents working with the Dorset County Council Heritage Coast Ranger. Copies available at £2.50 from Dorset Countryside, The Barracks, Bridport Road, Dorchester DT1 1RN (cheques payable to Dorset County Council).

OSMOTHERLEY, North Yorkshire - three linen covered panels mounted in free standing oak frames, with distinctive village buildings embroidered and attached. The corner spaces show seasonal activities. Work started in 1988.

OSWESTRY, Shropshire - As part of a rehabilitation programme at Oswestry's psychiatric day centre from 1995, a number of panels were created in different media - tapestry, painting, clay, calligraphy, weaving and silkscreen. See what local people have said about the map.

OTTERTON, Devon - A 37" x 23" painted and drawn historical map of field names in 1846, based on an old tithe map.

OTTERY ST MARY, Devon - a 19" x 16" watercolour map.

OULTON, Staffordshire - a painted map made in 1987.

OVER HADDON, Derbyshire - a textile collage, 1979.

OVINGDEAN, East Sussex - a tapestry made in 1988 for an exhibition at Michelham Priory organised by the East Sussex Federation of Womens Institutes.

PARHAM, West Sussex - a 54" x 43" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. The original is in Parham House and a full sized copy is displayed in the Old School at Rackham. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

PATCHAM, East Sussex - an embroidered applique hanging made in 1988 for an exhibition at Michelham Priory organised by the East Sussex Federation of Womens Institutes.

PELSALL, Staffordshire - a tapestry made in 1993 showing the changing face of Pelsall.

PENKRIDGE, Staffordshire - an A2 poster folded into three, made in 1988.

PENSFORD, Somerset - Merrywood Girls School, 1990.

PENTRIDGE, Dorset - artist Judith Gillespie painted this map in 2000. It shows land use, wild life, archaeological features and all the houses in the village. She walked the field boundaries and carried out research.

PETROCKSTOWE, Devon - A 4'6" x 6'6" map embroidered and appliqued onto hessian by more than 60 people, including the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. On display in the village hall.

PETWORTH, West Sussex - made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

PEVENSEY, East Sussex - a map showing footpaths and historical information, made in 1988.

PILTON, Devon - a 42" x 32" embroidered map made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995 .

PLAISTOW, West Sussex - an 18" x 25" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is to be hung in Winterton Hall, Plaistow, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

PLUMSTEAD COMMON, London - a map made in 1993 by an artist working with the Plumstead Common Environment Group.

PODINGTON, Bedfordshire - Painted with paper cut-outs. A photographic print, 40" by 32" displayed in the church porch, 1989.

POLESWORTH, Warwickshire - costume dolls.

POLING, West Sussex - a 53" x 43" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is usually on display in the parish church, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place. Some more details can be found here.

POLTIMORE, Devon - made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995, and designed so that it can be added to and updated to record events and physical changes to the community. Displayed in the village hall.

PORTLAND, Dorset - a 21" x 34" embroidered map made in 1989.

PORTSMOUTH, Hampshire - (1) 'Sewing the Sails', 1994, a project created by Dot To Dot with the people of Portsmouth for the city's 800th anniversary celebrations. Over 700 people were involved making 'sails' which depicted themes concerning life in Portsmouth. (2) Nelson Ward's parish map shows many different people, houses and shops and demonstrates what the children of the Flying Bull Middle School noticed about their place - including a surfeit of traffic cones. Some shopkeepers made their own shops, and teachers made the school. It is displayed at Buckland Community Centre; (3) 20 community groups in Paulsgrove worked together to produce a five-pannelled banner showing things that make Paulsgrove a special place for them. It is displayed at Paulsgrove Community Centre and used each year at the carnival; (4) six mixed media framed works were produced by Roger Palmer in 1986 for an exhibition called Know Your Place held in Exeter.

POTTENHAM, Surrey - a mural on tiles in the village hall.

POWERSTOCK, Dorset - a paper and photographic collage made in 1988.

POYNTON, Cheshire - map made at Poynton County High School.

PREES, Shropshire - a patchwork and embroidery map made between 1993-95 by the local WI for their 70th anniversary. The map shows field patterns, and is housed in the village hall.

PRESTWOOD, Buckinghamshire - Buckinghamshire CVS worked with local artists to make this map, 1996.

PULBOROUGH, West Sussex - a 41" x 28" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

PULHAM ST MARY, Norfolk - this A1 map was drawn onto acrylic and plastic by local artists and residents in 1994, as part of the parish council's centenary. A week of celebrations included a play about the village and a wallhanging made in cross stitch by local school children depicting buildings and characters who had featured in the play.
