Ideford to Lynchmere

IDEFORD, Devon - a 3' x 2' silk tapestry made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. Displayed in the village hall.

IFFLEY, Oxfordshire - a 7' x 3' embroidered parish quilt, made in 1987.

ILSINGTON, Devon - a 4' x 3' collage made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. A painting surrounded by embroidered squares.

IPPLEPEN, Teignbridge district, Devon - a collage made from organic found objects in November 1987. Artist Garry Miller worked with local school children for an exhibition called KnowingYour Place, in Exeter. See also East Devon Schools.

ITCHENOR, West Sussex - a 38" x 27" painted linen map with hand embroidery, made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is designed to hang in the recently refurbished Memorial Hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place. See what local people have said about the map.

JEVINGTON and FILCHING, East Sussex - a tapestry made in 1988 for an exhibition at Michelham Priory organised by the East Sussex Federation of Womens Institutes.

KELSALL, Cheshire - Embroidered card and fabric map, made in 1995 by Kelsall WI with Cheshire Landscape Trust and members of the community. The border shows all the trees in the parish.

KENDAL, Cumbria - (1) Queen Katherine's View - Photographic map at the Brewery Arts Centre, 1987; (2) Kendal - A Nice Place to Live, slides and photgraphs.

KENN, Devon - a 100cm x 70cm watercolour made by a member of the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. Notelets and a teatowel were made from it.

KENNET AND AVON CANAL, Wiltshire - a quilted textile map made by the Urchfont White Horse Quilters in 1988. Each member chose a stretch of canal to walk, then made their map section from their own drawings and photographs. The map is kept at the canal visitor centre in Devizes.

KENNINGHALL, Norfolk - the tree wardens have made a map including field names, and also created an exhibition and map showing important hedges, 1997. See also Breckland District Council.

KENTISBEARE and BLACKBOROUGH, Devon - an embroidery made by Kentisbeare Primary School in 1989.

KENTISBURY, Devon - a 50" x 63" collage made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995.

KENTON and POWDERHAM, Devon - a watercolour map made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995.

KILMINGTON, Devon - a 17" x 25" painting made by the local Women's Institute group with the Parish Council as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. It shows historical buildings, places, flora and fauna.

KINGS HEDGES, Cambridge - In 1997-98 an exhibition was held of maps made by groups in this district of Cambridge.

KINGS SEMBOURNE, Hampshire - a map made in 1994.

KINGSTON SEYMOUR, Somerset - A map has been made each year at the same time as the best kept village competition, by the same woman. One year it was made into a teatowel, with proceeds going towards repairing the village's church tower, 1991.

KINGSWOOD, Somerset - (1) Kingswood and Hanham Old People and People's Welfare Association, 1990, (2) GCSE Art & Design project, 1990, (3) Tapestry of Kingswood life, on show in Trinity Church, 1990.

KINVER, Staffordshire - a 3' x 2' noticeboard made in 1987 initiated by the parish council.

KNOWLE, Bristol - Coloured maps showing the locality around Knowle Junior School, made with the Artist in Residence Lucy Miller, 1990.

LANCASTER - a photographic map made in 1987.

LANDBEACH, Cambridgeshire - an on-line map which can be viewed on their web-site.

LANDKEY, Devon - a 56" x 52" embroidered map produced by Landkey WI with the Discovering Landkey Project.

LANDSCOVE, Devon - a textile map was started in 1995.

LANGFORD, Oxfordshire - an embroidery made in 1990 as part of a schools project.

LATHOM, Lancashire - a map made in 1987, displayed in the entrance to the primary school.

LAVANT, West Sussex - a 29" x 41" watercolour and pencil illustrated map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It now hangs in the Memorial Hall, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

THE LAVERS, Essex - a 50" x 56" painted map made by the local history society as an entry to a competition by Essex Association of Parish Councils to celebrate Essex Heritage Year in 1989. An artist worked with local people, and the resulting map shows many of their homes and notable people who have lived in the village. A half-sized copy is on display in the village hall.

LEEK FRITH, Staffordshire - a 3' x 2' noticeboard made in 1987, initiated by the parish council.

LEY HILL, Buckinghamshire - a needlework map, 8 ft x 6ft with 24 x 1 ft square panels around its outer edge. It was completed in 2000, and can be seen in the Ley Hill Memorial Hall. The picture above shows Margaret Long (left) and Pat Gregory (right) who put in a great deal of work on the map. Each panel was made by a local activity group. The map depicts not only the streets but a stitched representation of the village hall, and stitched local flora and fauna. LINDFIELD - Two maps made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project: (1) a 28" x 35" watercolour, pen and ink illustrated map, which now hangs in the library of King Edward Hall; (2) a 54" x 42" watercolour map of Lindfield Rural parish which is on display at Scaynes Hill New Millennium Village Centre. The maps are featured in the book A Sense of Place.

LITTLE and GREAT BOOKHAM, Surrey - (1) a painted map made in 1986; (2) three 18" x 30" paintings made in 1989 with Fetcham and kept in St Mary's Church.

LITTLE BUDWORTH, Cheshire - textile map with embroidery, produced with Cheshire WI and the Cheshire Landscape Trust, 1993.

LITTLEHEMPSTON, Devon - a poster made in 1997 by Sheila Braithwaite and Charlotte Cantrae, financed by the Parish Council.

LITTLE MUNDEN, Hertfordshire - produced by resident John Grisbrooke and illustrated by the artist Dudley Drake.

LITTLE TORRINGTON, Devon - a 6' x 4' textile map made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. The map evolved as more people came forward with ideas and input. Displayed in the village hall.

LIVERPOOL - 'Pool of Life', made for Liverpool Women's Hospital in 1995 by an artist in residence working with staff and managers. Based around Maze garden, with pathways, waterways, gardens surrounded by the river Mersey, and showing open spaces, parks, historical features, arts, music and memories. 10'6" x 7', displayed in the hospital foyer.

LOCKWOOD,Saltburn, N. Yorkshire - All of the community were involved with sponsored walks around the parish boundary. School children painted a map, which comprised five pieces reflecting the five villages in the parish, showing all the fields and land units. Community artist Barbara Agar worked with the children, producing a 3-D fabric jigsaw, 3 inches deep and 9 feet square, stretched over cardboard and fibreglass with batik and quilting, 1986-90.

LODDISWELL, Devon - a map made in 1999 by villagers working with artist Mike Glanville.

LODSWORTH, West Sussex - a 47" x 35" watercolour illustrated map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. On permanent display at the new Recreation Hall, and featured in the book A Sense of Place. The Lodsworth Map Group have decided to use the profits from the sale of maps and accompanying books to present two local schools, Easebourne CE Primary and Midhurst Intermediate, each with two prizes for pupils' work which describes, by illustrated maps, essays, or a combination of both, why the area in which they live is special to them. The prizes will be presented annually until the funds are exhausted. The detail of the Lodsworth map shown on the left can be seen in larger scale here.

LONDON COLNEY, Hertfordshire - a poster painted in 1994-95 for London Colney Village Concern, showing old and new village views before they disappear and field names.

LONG SUTTON, Somerset - a map co-ordinated by the WI for the millennium in 2000.

LOUGHTON, Essex - one of the earliest Parish Maps, made in 1985.

LOWER HEYFORD, Oxfordshire - The Parish Council has embarked on an ambitious project to produce a two-part Parish Map. The first phase is to be a map of the entire parish, the second, to cover the settlements of Lower Heyford and Caulcott in greater detail. LOXWOOD, West Sussex - a 42" x 28" watercolour and acrylic illustrated map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is kept in the village hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

LUDHAM, Norfolk - A large fabric map completed in 2004, which shows every road, field, and house. It can be seen in St Catherine's church, but may "travel locally when invited." Jane Stevens, co-ordinator of the Ludham Community Archive Group says "The group has had tremendous fun and forged new friendships. The resulting digital archive is going well, as are village slideshows, booklets and walks as spinoffs." LUPPITT, Devon - a 42cm x 60cm drawing produced by the village magazine The Luppitt Packet in 1995.

LURGASHALL, West Sussex - a 33" x 23" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is to be kept in the village hall, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

LUXULYAN VALLEY, Cornwall - a collage and watercolour made in 1986.

LYDFORD, Devon - a very illustrative 60cm x 41cm watercolour made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. Shows villagers and activities in the village, very much about the place now rather than historical.

LYMINSTER, West Sussex - a 30" x 42" watercolour and photographic map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It hangs in Lyminster church and is featured in the book A Sense of Place. Some more details can be found here.
