DALWOOD, Devon - a 24" x 18" painted map.

DARLINGTON, County Durham - the Darlington Community Tapestry, made in 1988.

DEEPING ST JAMES, Cambridgeshire - The village held a festival of Parish maps in 1991, at seven venues and involving community groups and scouts. Two permanent maps resulted - (1) a handmade paper map by artist Gerry Copp with local children, on display at the local library and (2) an embroidered map by the WI, displayed at the health centre.

DENBURY, Devon - seven tapestry panels made by Denbury Tapestry Group in 1995.

DERWENT RIVER, Yorkshire - a project begun in 1996 working along the Derwent, encouraging groups and communities to map their own section of the river.

DEVIZES, Wiltshire - a 4' x 6' tapestry designed and made by schools and community groups for the 850th anniversary of the town in 1991. It shows the landscape, a medieval street plan, buildings, a white horse and a corn circle. Wansdyke Primary School hosted the project in their school - weaving took an entire term to complete. The map is now kept in Devizes town hall.

DEVON FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S INSTITUTES held a Parish Maps exhibition in 1995 as part of their 75th anniversary celebrations. Over 80 maps were made, involving WI groups from Abbotsham, Alphington, Axmouth, Aylesbeare, Beaford, Beer, Brayford Speke, Badford, Broadhembury, Buckland Brewer, Burlescombe, Churston Ferres and Galmpton, Clovelly, Clyst Hydon, Clyst St Lawrence and Langford, Colyton, Dawlish, Ermington, Filleigh, Georgeham, Halberton, Heavitree, High Bickington, Holcombe Rogus, Ideford, Ilsington, Kentisbeare, Kewton and Powderham, Kilmington, Kingsbridge and Dodbrook, Kingsteignton, Lee, Little Torrington, Longdown, Motcombe and Burnell, Lympstone, Manaton, Moretonhampstead, Newton Abbot, Newton Poppleford and Harpford, North Tawton, Petrockstowe, Pinhoe, Poltimore, Plymtree, Shute and Whitford, Silverton, Stockland, Wellswoop, West Down, Whitchurch, Widecombe, Woolacombe and Yeoford.

DIGSWELL, Hertfordshire - a map evolved from a series of boundary walks.

DISS, Norfolk - a poster made by the Diss and District Society.

DITTISHAM, Devon - A 3' x 2.5' 1:2500 scale map of the village showing rights of way, initiated by Dittisham Parish Council.

DONNINGTON, West Sussex - a 34" x 24" computer-assembled watercolour and photographic collage made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. A copy is displayed in the parish hall and it is featured in the book A Sense of Place. See what local people have said about the map.

DRY DRAYTON, Cambridgeshire - A map for the millennium, A1, full colour, shows all roads, footpaths and fields in the parish, and is illustrated with insets of the main buildings, various fauna, flora and texts, 1999-2000. £3.95 plus £1.00 p&p. DULVERTON, Somerset - a photographic map made at Dulverton Middle School.

DUNCHIDEOCK, Devon - an A2 watercolour map made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. Displayed in the village hall. The group hoped to make tea towels and greetings cards from the map, proceeds of which would go towards re-curtaining the village hall.

DUNKESWELL, Devon - made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. A 6' x 5' fabric collage hanging in St Nicholas' Church. The village is a combination of the old centre and a new estate, and the map making exercise was felt to be an excellent way of crossing the boundaries.

DURNFORD and WOODFORD, Wiltshire - Made in 1991 by the local WI group for a competition, this A2 watercolour was for some time hung in Durnford Ward at Odstock Hospital. Since the closure of that ward, the map has been kept in St Andrew's Church, Durnford. The map shows historic buildings, wild life, activities, flora and agriculture.

EARLS BARTON, Northants - a textile map made in 1996, co-ordinated by NORWEN (Northants Women's Environment Network). Made as a patchwork, so individuals could all do a square in their own way.

EASEBOURNE, West Sussex - a 50" x 36" watercolour map, computer assembled, made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It hangs in the refectory of Easebourne Priory, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

EASTBOURNE SAFFRONS, East Sussex - a fabric collage made in 1988 for an exhibition at Michelham Priory organised by the East Sussex Federation of Womens Institutes.

EAST DEAN, Hampshire - The map (left) was hand drawn by Robert Dodd in the village for the community group. A printed copy and accompanying book was given to each resident at the new millennium. The map illustrates land use and records crops grown during the year 2000. Little-known locality names and current field names supplied by farmers and landowners were also shown.

EAST DEVON SCHOOLS - a number of schools produced maps for an exhibition called Knowing Your Place in Exeter in 1987. These included Clyst Hydon, Bampton, East Budleigh, St Sidwells (Exeter), Northleigh, Farway, Clyst St George, Ebford and Exton, Uffculme and Ippleden.

EASTERGATE, West Sussex - a 16" x 23" watercolour and oil collage made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. One of the Five Villages. The map is featured in the book A Sense of Place.

EAST KNOYLE, Wiltshire - a textile map made in 1988.

EASTON, Bristol - Batik on cloth. For Easton Community Centre. The map was taken around the area on a double-decker bus; each group or individual was able to add a piece, 1993. See what local people have said about the map.

ECKINGTON, Derbyshire - textile collage with paint, print and patchwork made at Eckington Junior School, 1988.

ECCLESHALL, Staffordshire - made in 1989 as a result of a Staffordshire Rural Community Council initiative.

EDWINSTOWE, Notts - a textile map completed in 1996.

ELLEL, Lancashire - a photographic map made in 1987.

ELMDON, Essex - an A2 millennium map including watercolours of houses and field names.

ELSTED, TREYFORD and DIDLING, West Sussex - a 33" x 50" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is displayed in Elsted village hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.. Some more details can be found here.

ELY, Cambridgeshire - A map was planned in 1995.

EMBERTON, Buckinghamshire - A 2m x 1.5m tapestry produced by the Well & Towers History Society as part of The Living Archive's Fabric of Milton Keynes. Most of the village became involved, from 7 to 86 years of age, and it took nearly a year to complete, 1994.

ERMINGTON, Devon - A 60cm x 75cm watercolour made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. It depicts Ermington in 1920, when the WI began.
