Parish Maps
Elham, Kent

Members of the Elham Circle decided they wanted to produce a footpath map, but soon became carried away with how much they wanted to include, so decided a Parish Map was far more appropriate. The map is a painting, 8 feet long. None of those involved were artists, but they felt they wanted to create the map as well as collect all the information. With a grant from Rural Action they were able to approach Graham Clarke, a local artist, who gave them tuition and other practical help.
"We in the Elham Circle felt that the production of the map was very worthwhile, it brought us closer together and made us more aware of our beautiful valley. we are currently updating all 56 of our footpaths and doing conservation work in the chalk pit area, so it has all had a knock on effect."
They have since made a map to celebrate the chalk flora they have discovered, which was published at their annual flower festival.
