Parish Maps
Chideock, Dorset

"The village lies by the sea, and has become a busy holiday place, its numbers more than double in the summer and autumn. A period of retrieval happens over the few winter months, when the place preens its tattered traces, gathers its memories and re-asserts its own identity, before the next season of demands deluges and dilutes its personality again. Those who live there felt just about in control, but plans to extend yet further the caravan park and the season, filled people with fears of final drowning".
Inspired by the Uplyme Parish Map nearby, the Chideock Society involved people with passions in history, nature and much more to create their own, over two years. It shows what they value, both for themselves and tourists who visit. A photographic record was made of all the streets in the parish as a starting point, followed by questions and teas held in the village hall. A good deal of positive action and activity has been initiated through the mapping to try and keep the growth in tourism at a controllable level, paid for in part by proceeds from the printed map, copies of which are available in the Clock House Inn and the Chideock Hill Stores.
