Trees, Woods and the Green Man
Exhibitions
A touring exhibition with the South Bank Centre (the touring arm of the Arts Council of Great Britain).
With the South Bank Centre we commissioned 28 artists to explore the contemporary relevance of the Tree of Life. During its 5 weeks at the Royal Festival Hall, London, it was seen by 30,000 people. The exhibition toured 13 venues during 1989-90 providing a wonderful opportunity to spark people's imagination and acting as a starting point for local conservation.
In the accompanying catalogue, Marina Warner writes: The tree of life grows as a symbol of hope, of future, of fullness; if it continues to stand - as the acid rain drips down and the paper mills whine and the rainforests fall and the nuclear power stations explode - it points to another world, a beyond which will be different ... the tree of life is above all the start of the story, a sign of refusing despair, in desperate times.
Artists in the exhibition were Adrian Berg, Eileen Cooper, Stephen Cox, Lynn Dennison, Rose Finn-Kelcey, Lili Fischer, Noel Forster, Ron Haselden, Tim Head, Susanna Heron, John Hubbard, Andrzej Jackowski, Balraj Khanna, Ken Kiff, Simon Lewty, John Maine, Matta, Garry Fabian Miller, Mali Morris, David Nash, Shanti Panchal, Michael Porter, Simon Read, Liz Rideal, Terry Setch, Amikam Toren, John Virtue, Bill Woodrow.
A Common Ground / Crafts Council touring exhibition.
The work in this exhibition was inspired by trees and woods - their imagery and symbolism. It comprised fine art and craft and works included sculpture, ceramics, glass, photography, silverware, ironwork, neon, jewellery, applique and wood turning.
Nearly 12,000 people came to see the exhibition at the Crafts Council Gallery in London over a nine week period. It toured England and Wales until early 1991. The works are described in the one-off newspaper PULP!, part of 56 pages all about trees, woods and our cultural relationship with them.
