Apple Day
The Longest Peel Competition

The Longest Peel Competition has been a favourite with Apple Day organisers and their guests, but the national competition began at the suggestion of the organisers of Damerham Apple Day in Hampshire in 2000.
They asked Common Ground to compare the results from competitions around the country to find the Longest of the Longest Peels.
Participants simply peel an apple in a spiral keeping the peel in one continuous piece then measure using a piece of string. Some participants use a hand peeler or knife, others use a hand wound peeling and coring machine. The peeling machine tends to produce much longer peels so this year we have separated these into different categories.

World Record
According to Guinness World Records: “The record for the longest unbroken apple peeling is held by Kathy Walfer (USA) who peeled an apple in 11 hours 30 minutes with a peel length of 52.51m, 172ft 4in, at Long Ridge Mall, Rochester, New York on 16 October 1976”. Can you believe that?

LONGEST APPLE PEEL COMPETITION
THE RULES:
Simply peel an apple in a spiral keeping the peel in one continuous piece. Some experts advise starting at the top of the apple near the stem, then paring, moving the apple in a circular motion.
Then measure the length of the peel. So as not to break the peel, this can be done by gently matching the peel to a piece of string, then measuring the string. Provide a decent knife to stop people from wanting to bring their own.
Please photocopy the entry forms on the reverse of this page to give to/or fill in with each participant.
CATEGORIES: there are 4:
1. Peeling using a paring knife, arc/swivel peeler or traditional vegetable peeler: adult (18 and over)
2. Peeling using a paring knife, arc/swivel peeler or traditional vegetable peeler: under 18.
3. Peeling using a hand wound apple parer/peeling machine: adult (18 and over)
4. Peeling using a hand wound apple parer/peeling machine: under 18
Please note the junior category is now under 18, not 16 and under as before.
Measurements of the lengths achieved must be verified by the competition organiser. Photographs advised.
PRIZES
Prizes to be announced.
Please send back your entry forms by 8th November 2010 with photos of the winner with his/her peel if possible to: Common Ground, Gold Hill House, 21 High Street, Shaftesbury, Dorset SP7 8JE.
NOTES
Make sure the apples provided for the competition are fresh and firm. It obviously helps the participants if the apples are large – some of the heftiest are our unique cooking apples: Beauty of Kent, Catshead, Harvey, Howgate Wonder, Lord Derby, Newton Wonder, Peasgood Nonsuch, Reverend W. Wilks, Warner’s King, Yorkshire Greening, Bramley’s Seedling.
Apple peeling machines are available from £17.00 - £30.00 – search the www for stockists.
Ensure that you think about knives and age groups and responsibility in your risk assessment.
RECORDS The Apple Day record is held by Robert Allen from Hertfordshire who achieved a peel of 37 feet in 2006
