An Apple a Day ...

Over the next three weeks, this page will host an "advent calendar" of apples from October 1st, leading up to Apple Day on the 21st. These are just 21 of the almost 3,000 cooking, eating and cider apples we can grow in this country.

You could eat a different kind of apple every day for more than six years and still not come to the end of the varieties we can grow here. So instead of buying the usual nine British varieties available from the superstores (and certainly not imported fruit in our apple season), try some less usual kinds from PYO outlets, fruit farms, farm shops, farmers’ markets and W.I. stalls (Country Markets). You can also buy them mail order from specialist suppliers (have a look at our Orchards pathway for some examples).
