Apple Day

1990

London, Covent Garden

The first Apple Day on October 21st 1990, bringing fruit back to the old Apple Market in Covent Garden after 16 year’s absence. Forty stalls were taken by fruit growers, nurseries, juice and cider makers, beekeepers, writers and illustrators with their books, the local WI selling apple chutney’s jellies and pies, Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust explained how it manages its orchard for wild life, Mallorees School in North London demonstrated its orchard classroom. There was a calvados and cider bar run by the Campaign for Real Ale, experts from Brogdale Horticultural Trust, musicians, apple jugglers and magicians.

The idea and enthusiasm from that first day has spread far and wide and Apple Day has become an integral part of the calendar for many village halls, farmers’ markets, wildlife trusts, museums, societies, schools, the Royal Horticultural Society and the National Trust.
